In The Window of Understanding (Diptych), husband-and-wife artist duo Mariel Hannah and Abe Buller (Halifax, VA) visualize the emotional distance—and growing connection—between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. At dusk, Darcy’s words emerge through Abe’s expressive charcoal drawing; at dawn, Mariel’s photograph captures Elizabeth reading his letter, each figure inhabiting a world of their own. Framed by a window, the two scenes unfold across time and perspective, tracing Elizabeth’s movement from anger toward compassion. Through drawing, photography, and thoughtful composition, the artists render understanding as something slowly illuminated.
