In The Piano, Sylvain Dubrunfaut (Lille, France) transforms a familiar Austenian scene of music and observation into an intimate portrait of male desire. A young man bends over the keys while another figure watches closely, creating a charged but subtle moment of attraction. His expressive gouache brushwork gives the scene a raw, almost cinematic immediacy, while the figures’ vulnerability challenges conventional representations of masculinity. Sylvain’s reimagining allows male tenderness, sensuality, and desire to exist openly within Austen’s world.

What inspires the artist?
“For this collection, I naturally gravitated towards motifs that stage humanity, drawing on visual symbols such as reading, playing the piano, and dancing, as well as the expression of feelings like introspection, passion, and rejection. I transposed symbols from the novel into our contemporary world, highlighting homosexuality between men, which I believe is essential to defend and celebrate.”
