Oil on Canvas
Nightshift depicts a crouching, humanoid creature in the mouth of a grave. Its eyes are wide and haunting, and its limbs are jumbled and disproportionate. This creature is not, in fact, the Creature, who has not yet been made, but Victor’s inner self as he commits the terrible act of digging up bodies as material. A blood red sunrise is the punctured eye witness to Victor’s atrocity. On the hill behind him are more graves, not yet disturbed. This striking scene brings new emphasis to the depravity of Victor’s behavior, and causes us to wonder how far he is willing to go. A reflection on the artists' own practice, this work challenges the collision of art and ego. It celebrates critique as an opportunity to catch what we may have overlooked in our respective night shifts.
