Melo Porter (Aptos, CA) creates minimalist, confection-colored paintings that distill complex social dynamics into seductive fields of color, gesture, and form. The Three Graces turns three women at the Meryton Ball into a study of fashion, desirability, and the act of looking. What first feels playful becomes more unsettling: Seen only from behind, the obscured women become surfaces to be viewed, compared, and selected. Drawing on Austen’s social codes and Lydia Bennet’s boundary-pushing spirit, Porter asks what happens when a woman’s individuality is reduced to desirability.
