In The Promise, Hollie Chastain (Chattanooga, TN) transforms Elizabeth’s confrontation with Lady Catherine into a striking study of power, age, and defiance. Against a vintage book-cover ground, light and dark figures face one another, their contrasting tones emphasizing the imbalance between them. Elizabeth appears smaller, yet her lighter presence suggests an inner strength that refuses to yield to Lady Catherine’s authority. Gouache, embroidery thread, and layered collage heighten the tension, while the shared surface holds both women—and their opposing wills—within the same charged space.

What inspires the artist?
“I have always reached back into history for materials and stories to bring into my work. I often combine faded materials, handwritten notes and letters, and books with scrawlings and stamps with modern palettes and design to tell new stories. This collection reaches back into a story very near and dear to my heart and allows the collected materials to narrate.”
