Melo Porter (Aptos, CA) often uses color and form to explore desire, propriety, and rebellion. In Let Them Eat Cake, Lydia Bennet turns the wedding cake—the ultimate symbol of feminine ritual and social expectation—into a seat, transforming sweetness and ceremony into an act of defiance. Her partially exposed figure, turned away from the viewer, heightens the sense of spectacle and indulgence. Drawing on Henry Fuseli’s fetishized female forms and the cultural anxieties surrounding feminine excess, Melo positions Lydia between desire and consequence. The result is playful, provocative, and deliciously unruly.
