An exquisitely detailed colored-pencil illustration, Be Not Alarmed by Paulette Pearson (Dallas, TX) turns Darcy’s handoff of his fateful letter to Elizabeth into a tension-filled moment of drama and desire. Two hands meet around the envelope, its red wax seal drawing the eye to the moment of its delivery. Against a field of white, Paulette strips the scene to its essential elements, allowing the letter to become a symbol of vulnerability, revelation, and changing perception. The precision of her linework makes this intimate exchange feel almost suspended in time.
