Join writers and scholars O.F. Cieri and Sasha Ravitch for a mini lecture on the queer decadence of Oscar Wilde, focusing on the erotic aesthetics of Salome and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Cieri will consider the works, artists, and ideas in conversation with Wilde’s queer aesthetics, including Victorian art movements and the erotic novel Teleny, rumored to have been written by Wilde. Ravitch will turn to the erotic and cannibalistic undercurrents of Salome, considering the doppelgänger, appetite, witchcraft, and desire in Wilde’s charged portrayals of Salome, Herodias, and John the Baptist. Where does desire veer toward terror, and how does Wilde navigate the queer sublime?
